In fact, homework time is often the most stressful part of the day for kids with ADHD and their parents. The biggest challenge is typically the extreme amount of time it takes kids with ADHD to get their homework completed. Its not uncommon for it to take kids with ADHD hours to complete their homework every night, even when its only taking other kids in the class about 30 minutes to finish the same assignments. During these hours, parents feel like they are nagging their kids to get started on their work and stay on task. Even with all of this effort, parents are frustrated by the quality of the completed assignments, which they feel doesnt reflect their childs full potential. Kids are frustrated, too. They think their parents are being too hard on them, and they feel like they are missing out on the fun time they should be having in the evening after a long (and often stressful) day at school. When it comes to getting homework done more quickly, there is one simple step that can help dramatically: having your child take breaks during homework time. Yes, adding breaks can actually shorten the amount of time your child spends on homework! If youre like most parents, you may be skeptical and reluctant to encourage your child to take a break from their homework, especially when its been such a challenge to get them started and focused in the first place. But when theyre done right, homework breaks can make it easier for your child to get started on homework and can help them stay focused longer. Why? Stay in the homework area during breaks. Aside from getting a glass of water or using the bathroom, kids should stay close to their homework area. This makes it much easier to get back on task when the break is over. There can be easy fun activities nearby for use during breaks, like a Nerf basketball hoop. Just make sure the activities arent something so engaging that your child will struggle to stop playing when the break is over. Avoid screen time during breaks. Most kids will struggle to transition between screen time and homework, making it much more difficult to get back on task when the break is over. If needed, provide rewards for getting back to work. These rewards can be checkmarks or stickers that can be exchanged for a fun activity when all of their assignments are completed. The only thing that matters is that the pronunciation is as accurate as possible.Speaking about pronunciation, this is one of the most common issues for people who are trying to learn English. Alexa does not like to generalize, but she says that learning how to think in English is a way to avoid mistakes and learning pronunciation rather than an accent is very important.One of the techniques that Alexa uses to teach her students how to think in English is the reading of movie dialogues and synopsis. This can help not only the learning of vocabulary, but also help students learn how to sound more natural when speaking in English. According to her, this exposure to modern English is one of the most effective ways for a non-native to learn how to speak naturally.Besides that, the exposure to cultural issues also helps in the learning p rocess. There are many ways to express the same thing according to the region you are from, that is why Alexa believes that knowing more about culture is essential to a better understanding of the language.My conversation with Alexa flowed naturally and one of the things I noticed was that she does not like generalizations. To Alexa, treating each student individually is sacred. The 2016 Presidential Candidates

Hillary also has seen her husband’s election to the Oval Office in 1992 and reelection in 1996. She has formally declared her intention to run and is building a war chest now. Clinton has an interesting advantage or disadvantage depending on how you look at it; she is trying to be the first woman to be elected to the presidency. However, she’s not the only woman running. Carly Fiorina, a businesswoman from Virginia, has announced her candidacy. Sarah Palin, former governor of Alaska and vice-presidential candidate has also looked into running, but is not yet formally involved. With these opposing women running for the Republicans, it seems that there will be some more contenders on the female side. 2.)  Ted Cruz (image courtesy of www.freerepublic.com) Mr. Cruz is relatively new to Capitol Hill having been elected to the Senate in 2012. However, Cruz has been in the capital under Clinton and Bush, eventually returning to Texas to become the state solicitor general, responsible for representing Texas in the Supreme Court. He is a conservative Republican. 3.)  Jim Webb Perhaps Cruz’s foil, Webb is a staunch democrat, voting very much in opposition to Cruz’s ideals. (image courtesy of www.newsmax.com) Being one of only three  major Democrat politicians to declare, Webb’s got a good chance of doing well in this election simply by virtue of his limited competition. A decorated Vietnam War veteran, Webb is actively involved with Southeast Asia and is married to a South Vietnamese refugee. Well familiar with the armed forces and foreign policy, Webb might prove to be a serious contender for his foreign policy. 4.)  Dr. Ben Carson (image courtesy of www.buttonsonline.com) A former neurosurgeon and best-selling author, Dr. Carson is a Detroit native with a strong medical history. More recently, he has been involved in politics and policy. His views are largely conservative Republican, but he has views that put him more towards the middle ground. Dr. Carson first jumped to the public eye with his book Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story which was later made into a movie by the same name. Carson has commented that he entered politics and believe others trained in scientific disciplines should as well because he “… [believes] it is a very good idea for physicians, scientists, engineers, and others trained to make decisions based on facts and empirical data to get involved in the political arena.” 5.)  Lincoln Chafee Mr. Chafee was formerly governor of Rhode Island as well as being the committee co-chair for Mr. Obama’s reelection campaign. Formerly a Republican Senator, Chafee switched over to the Democratic Party in 2008 to support President Obama’s campaign. However, upon election to the office of Governor of Rhode Island, Chafee’s approval ratings did not reflect well upon him and he declined a second term. A strong conservative Republican, Rubio has worked against taxes in an already tax-hating state. Rubio’s strongly conservative policies seem to be a good indicator of nomination from the Republican Party. However, Rubio’s approval ratings in Florida have been shown to be in the low 40s: not a good sign. However, Governor John Kasich of Ohio has looked into running for the Presidency as well and has a majority approval rating in his state, another historic swinger. Waka Flocka  has declared this past April 20 that he intends to run for president of the United States of America I kid you not. (image courtesy of www.popdust.com) As interesting as I’m sure his campaign would be, and as valuable as his outlooks and policies could be, Mr. Malphurs falls short of just one requirement to be president: he is only 28. The only requirements to be president are to be 35 years of age, be born in the U.S., a U.S. territory, or military base, and be elected by the Electoral College. While the rapper may not be eligible, he is important to this list of candidates because of his age. America has abysmal voter turnout. This past election saw the worst showing of American voters ever. Among those, America’s youth ages 18-24 have the lowest voting rate nationwide. While Mr. Malphurs cannot actually run, his enthusiasm and participation could draw in more voters this election. Please remember to register and vote. If you don’t want to vote for whoever is running, write in a name. Every vote matters. Even the Women’s Suffrage was passed by one vote. So please vote.

The Importance of Repetition in Elementary School Why Repetition in Elementary School Matters As young students adjust to being back in the classroom, they will start out with a certain amount of review from the previous year. However, they will quickly move on to unfamiliar topics, some of which will build upon that other information. In this case, its really important that students understand each building block in the process. If they do get lost academically, its beneficial to identify what step they didnt understand so they can troubleshoot within this area. One of the best ways to avoid getting off track is to focus on repetition. Like most adults, younger students need to do things a few times before it becomes second nature. This is especially true when it comes to academic subjects such as math and language arts. 1. Multi-step math problems One of the best examples of using repetition comes in the form of math problems. Whether a student is doing long division or algebra, they will need to complete several steps to get the final answer. Many students understand the concept of math but struggle with the application. Repetition can be extremely helpful in these circumstances, especially when done in front of an Orange County private tutor. The tutor can recognize which step of the problem the student is struggling with and focus on that particular part. If students practice their math problems enough times, they will be able to do them on their own. 2. Grammar and spelling Grammar and spelling have so many different rules, many of which are counterintuitive. Kids often ask why something is spelled differently than how it sounds or why a particular grammar rule is broken under certain circumstances. When it comes to standard American English, repetition is one of the best ways to memorize and learn why things are done a specific way. Cause and effect Cause and effect are another thing that can be taught with repetition. Cause and effect can be applied to any subject, history, and science in particular. This often has to happen a few times before kids become motivated to study in advance. Another example can be found when students have to read a chapter of a book every week. If they get behind, the effect is that theyll be reading all weekend. If they pace themselves, theyll have plenty of time to play. Problem-solving Problem-solving is another skill that takes time to learn. This is a tricky subject because each situation will be a little bit different. For example, students may need to complete a science experiment, or they may have to analyze a character in a novel. As kids get older, they will also have to problem solve when it comes to time management. Repetition is one of the key elements to finding a solution, or preferably multiple solutions, to academic problems. The more practice a student has, the more likely they are to be successful the first time around. In short Students need time to let certain subjects and concepts sink in. Some kids will understand a topic after three tries while others might need dozens of times to practice and refine their study skills. Each student is an individual and will have natural talents in different areas, but repetition will certainly help them be successful in the end. Final Grades What do They Mean for You What do Final Grades Mean for You? Once high school students get their final grades for the year they are free to go off and enjoy their summer. Many students dont think about what their final grades mean until it comes time to apply for college. However, its a good idea for students to look really at their final class grades and ask themselves a few questions. Is this a subject I struggle with? Do my grades seem fair? Is it the grade I was expecting? Students are also encouraged to calculate their GPA and get an idea of what types of colleges might be right for them. Additionally, if students have questions about their final exams or other assignments from the class, they should talk to their teacher to get feedback. 1. What do grades say about strengths and weaknesses? Final grades can help students look at their strengths and weaknesses. In many cases, a high school student will know that theyve always been great at science or that theyve always struggled with grammar. However, some students develop brand new skill sets once they reach the high school environment. Grades can be an indicator of both study skills and content knowledge. A final grade will give a student an idea of their overall strength in a particular subject. This can be very helpful when students need to choose which AP courses to take or what they might like to study once they get into college (READ: Why Its not too late to get a tutor for finals). 2. How will final grades affect college admittance? Students who are entering the college prep years might also want to think about how their final grades will affect college admittance. Most universities look at grades from sophomore to senior year, but some look at all four years. If the student’s final grades are a little bit lower than they would like them to be its a good opportunity to look at study habits and think about what students can get help with the following year. For example, did the student have an A in their math class going into the final but end up with a B overall? Why did their grade drop so suddenly? On the other hand, maybe a student had a straight B+ in their English class the entire year? 3. Are these grades accurate? Although grades are almost always accurate, it doesnt hurt to check. This is especially true if students were completing extra credit or if they were handing in missing assignments from earlier in the term. If students received a grade they werent expecting, they are encouraged to go online and look at each assignment and how much it was worth it. Some assignments might have been worth 20% of a students final grade while other assignments may have only been worth 2%. 4. How do final grades affect GPA? Students should also think about how their final grades affect their grade point average. In most cases, each class is worth the same amount of weight in a GPA. However, sometimes elective classes or after-school activities count for fewer units than academic classes. The online grading system should be able to calculate a GPA for the student, but students should learn how to calculate their GPA so they can stay informed throughout the year (READ: 5 Tips for Last Minute Finals Study). 5. Can grades be improved in the future? Students are also encouraged to think about whether or not grades can be improved in the future. In some cases, a student is struggling with the content of a course. Perhaps calculus is just really hard (it is!), in which case they might need to join a study group or work with a tutor one-on-one. Other times, a student might nail the subject matter but have difficulty organizing their many assignments and need to address their study strategy before the fall. Final grades give students great insight into their current skill set and ability and can help them determine how to approach the next year of high school this August.
